I am far from a professional photographer, but I take it as seriously as possible while still referring to it as a hobby. I take mostly pictures of people at events and many of my baby son without flash in low light situations.



I had been using a Nikon D40x for 1 year and very early reached my limitation with that camera. The Nikon D40x has very nice image quality, but the camera's interface is not suited for a more serious shooter who wants quick single button or dial access to such shooting parameters such as white balance, shooting mode, metering mode, etc. I also felt very limited by the D40x not having an in-body focus motor that would allow me to use non AF-I/AF-S lenses (which are lenses without the focus motor built-in).



The Nikon D40x limitations were severe enough that I was about to consider purchasing a Canon 40D until the Nikon D90 appeared just in time.





PROS:



1. Fantastic set of separate buttons on the camera to control parameters like ISO, white balance, metering, autofocus, image quality, shooting mode, etc.

2. Two command dials

3. High resolution 920K pixel LCD screen (like the one on the Nikon D300)

4. 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor

5. Low noise high ISO capability (for low light shooting) I can shoot ISO 1600 with good image quality with this camera, while on my D40x I could only shoot with ISO 400 and obtain acceptable IQ. I will even use ISO 3200 frequently with very usable results!

6. Separate top-viewing LCD screen in addition to the rear high res screen, to show shooting parameters constantly

7. In-body focus motor which allows the use of Nikon's non AF-I/S lenses, including wonderful and CHEAP prime lenses such as the Nikkor 50mm 1.8 (~$100 lens!)

8. Continuous shooting of 4.5 frames per second

9. Small size, although larger than the D40/D40x/D60, it is still substantially smaller in the hand than the D300/D3

10. 720p 24fps MPEG video shooting capability with incredible ability to use depth of field that I cannot achieve with my Sony High-Def camcorder.

11. Eleven auto-focus points (not as nice as the 51 points on the D300, but substantially better than my D40x with its 3 points)

12. GPS option

13. HDMI output

14. Enormous number of options to customize camera and shooting settings to fit your style of shooting

15. Fantastic image quality right out-of-box if you don't want to do any post processing

16. Terrific build quality

17. Top notch camera ergonomics (but this will be a very personal opinion that differs for each shooter)





CONS:



1. "Rolling shutter" phenomenon while recording video: The D90 CMOS sensor has the same problem that other CMOS video recorders have when recording video. If you move the camera, especially horizontally, you get a "jelly" or "rubberbanding" effect where the image wobbles significantly. It is nice to have the video features, which looks very sharp at 720p, but it is NOT a substitute for a video camera. If you use a tripod, and do not do quick zooms/pans, the video quality is excellent. Without a tripod, however, you may get nauseas watching a wobbly video. The sound is also in monoaural.

2. 1/200 flash synch: Not a problem for me, but it might be for you.

3. No weather sealing: This is found on the Nikon D300/D3 and even on similarly priced models from other camera companies

4. The buffer will fill up after about 8 continuous RAW + JPG (FINE) shots. This number differs depending on the shooting parameters that you will choose. If you shoot primarily JPG, the buffer seems to allow a very large number of continuous shots, but I have not quantified this for JPG only.





TIPS:



1. Get the FREE Nikon ViewNX software from Nikon's site as your 1st step in your workflow. This will let you examine your RAW images that you can process for either Nikon CaptureNX2 to do further RAW processing or just export to JPG for a JPG editor such as PhotoShop.

2. Recommend buying the Nikon CaptureNX2. It is a RAW converter (if you shoot in RAW) that will read the camera settings properly for export to JPG. Capture NX2, however, is not as slick as the Adobe products and Capture NX2 requires a fairly powerful computer, otherwise it can run pretty slowly on a PC > 3 years old.

3. If you use JPEGs out-of-camera, consider increasing the sharpness above the default 3 or 4. Nikon uses a very conservative sharpening default setting. Nikon has decided to change the default JPEG images to match the higher end D3/D700/D300 cameras which produce more neutral images. Consequently, the D90 images that are less punchy than the D40/D40x/D60/D80, so you may also want to turn up the in-camera saturation and contrast.







The Nikon D90 has all of the interface features that serious and even professional photographers need with wonderful image quality.

Watch for prices on this camera to drop as the Nikon D300 has been released. Although the D300 is the 'next' generation, most of its new features will not be necessary for most photographers unless you want to use the 'video' feature. I have two Nikons and in addition to the many features already mentioned, it feels quite comfortable in the hand: not too big or small, and just the right weight when you get accustomed to it, which, takes perhaps 3 or 4 days if you've been accustomed to a lighter model. But soon, it will feel like the perfect fit--unless you have some very unusual hand configuration.

The other reviews will tell you all you need to know, so I'll try to fit in some other stuff. It's an amazing all-around performer.



It's great in low-light, but I did notice something. About six of the pixels are "hot" meaning they show up either red or some other noticeable color in certain photos... primarily in low-light situations with the aperture wide-open. It's super-easy to fix using Photoshop or some other editing program, so not a big deal.



Battery life is amazing. I've left it sitting for months and still had enough for a regular day of shooting (a couple hundred photos) with plenty of battery to spare. In fact, I bought an extra battery just in case, but I've never had to use it.



On the D200, the rubber grips become loose over time. Nikon USA sells the rubber grips separately for about thirty bucks (1f998-074 Grip)(1f99-073 Front)(1f99-075 Rear). I bought my D200 used and the first thing I wanted to do was replace the grips... but after using it a bit and noticing that the looseness didn't affect usage at all, I decided to save the grips for when I sold the camera.



10.2 Megapixels are all I need... I never thought that the resolution needed to be better. My opinion might change if I used any of my photos in a format bigger than 8 x 10.



My camera has about 30,000 shutter actuations, and the shutter is supposed to last 100,000 or more. I'll update this if the shutter should fail before then.



So, in short, I love this camera and I won't upgrade until Nikon comes out with something that is significantly better!

This is a great camera even if Ken Rockwell doesn't really recommend it. I am a previous D200 owner, but I am very fond of this D300s. I still have much experimenting to do with this. I love my custom setup with vivid colors for landscapes and jewelry but I'm always forgetting to re-set it to normal when I'm taking people pictures. I haven't used the video as much as I want to. One draw back I couldn't edit the video with my Sony Vegas movie editing software, although I may have an earlier version of the software. Has anyone been able to do that?

The 18-200mm is the best Nikon lens made. Extremely versatile and may be the only lens you'll ever need. I love the new locking system.

 "Wonder for starter" 2009-09-24

I have received this product recently and have now started to do it. The kit includes all essential element for new-starter in the SLR camera world. I used to only use pocket-sized point and shoot camera and this kit fulfills all my need. With 2 very good lenses. 18-105mm VR is sufficient for a lot of occasions, the 70-300mm VR is a good complementary lens for zooming far objects. One can also invest in a wide-angle lense, something like 10-20mm for capturing closed big object. Then it's pretty much "enough" if we are not a professional photographer.



One drawback though, the SD card is not a "branded" make. Cheap stuff! So as the bag and the SD card holder. One can absolutely live without, or even want to buy better one to replace them. Otherwise Tripod is excellent, one extra battery (also non-branded) for "emergency" situations which is ok.



I overall find this a very good set, has everything I need and the price is very reasonable too.

First of all this is a really nice kit and i would recommend it for most people who have the money to get into professional or serious amateur Photography.



Pro's - Great price for the items included and everything arrived earlier than amazon expected it to be.



Con's - No lens filters, and a semi crappy DVD to jump start u into dSLR photography. Now the DVD is only 30 minutes and is very very rushed but if you dislike reading id say its not to shabby but if u read the first 50pages or so in the manual that came with the camera you get more info and have stuff explained better than in the DVD. Would rather get a lens filter than the DVD because i could have actually used the lens filters for a wile, where as the DVD was only good for someone who knows nothing about cameras and don't mind rushed explanations of how things work + they miss a lot of vital information in the 30min video that should have been there instead of some of the other things they put in it. Everything was all ready opened but nothing was scuffed or damaged in any way so it doesn't really bother me.



All done and said - Great starter kit, comes with 2 good lenses, a decent/good stand (depends on personal preference on stands), comes with a good lens cleaning kit(thought this also had a lens filter kit in it but it doesn't!), a very nice carrying bag(a little small in my opinion but it works, just gotta cram stuff into it some what to get it to fit everything. i also recommend wrapping the lenses and camera in towels so as to add some shock absorbtion and to keep them from getting scuffed and scratched.), a SD card reader which is awesome if u don't have have one and u don't want to go through the hassle of hooking ur camera up to the computer constantly to get pictures from it(personal preference here again), comes with a universal screen guard with four guards inside the box, the SD card wallet they put in it is kinda worthless(in my honest opinion since it doesn't offer as much protection as the little plastic cases they usually come in) and that's pretty much everything!

I went for this product [Nikon D60 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm AF-S VR Zoom Lens + Nikon 55-200mm AF-S VR Zoom Lens + 16GB SD Card + EN-EL9 Battery + Case] after a few weeks of on-line research and after having read several camera reviews.

I am returning to Nikon-brand after about 10 years of using other brands and honestly I feel a bit disappointed at the general feel of the quality of the Nikon equipments nowadays. The camera itself is OK-ish but everything seems to be made of cheap "recycled-toy" plastic and gives impression of being a "disposable" product. The camera itself is technically fine though, with its Nikon 18-55 lens, it is quick, responsive and easy to use. However, the other lens (55-200) does not give the impression of high quality very much. Having said that, if I were given the opportunity to re-do mu purchase I would only buy the "camera and 18-55 lens only" and not pay for the other (mainly unwanted)stuff included in the package. Beside the camera, everything else included in the package can be bought later if/when needed. Generally, When you buy a package you pay for accessories you might not use at all and the things you get in the package are probably of the lowest quality and cheapest on the market). Furthermore, in the package I bought, the camera case is too big for the camera and all its accessories. When you put the camera in the case, you have to put something soft on the top of the camera (such as an old T-Shirt) to keep it on the place. The bag feels very bulky when you travel. The battery might be unnecessary for someone (like me) who is not a heavy camera user. The SD-card and card reader: I could have ordered 2x8 or 4x4GB SD cards which made the total price much lower than one 16 GB. And finally, you can live without the other stuff included in the box such as a peace of fabric, (presumably to clean the lens with; I won't) a CD, a SD card wallet ( don't need), and a card-reader(my laptop reads all sorts of card. I think: you won't need or may not use many of these accessories so do not pay for them. They are just box-filler and eventually hurts your wallet.

I got my D60 just before our 3-week vacation. I had a slow 3mp Olympus,which 5 years ago was a good camera. The D60 is a dream, Nikon has taken YEARS of data and set Automatic parameters for all kinds of shots. I got a Digital Photo book so I could learn all the F-stops etc, but the Auto setting are near perfect. The settings are so good it will be a while before I learn to hand set parameters. My old camera was slow, I either had to wait or just anticipate and take pot luck on action shots. Not so with the D60, its lightning fast and gets good results. I highly recommend this for frustrated amatures or beginning Pros.

VALUE FOR MONEY



After an extensive research of 3 months,like every starter, I narrowed down my buying options to Nikon D60/D40 or Canon XSI(450D) or Nikon D90.

Canon Xsi and D90 definitely have some more features than D60 like AEB,9 focus points,movie mode,in-camera autofocus motor etc.., but with a highly, unjustifiable price tag.



Also, I was really turned off by reading the negative reviews about the Canon XSI autofocus,in almost every discussion forum.Autofocus is the heart of DSLR System.No matter what,it should be the best.All other features are not always indispensable.Nikon is known for its quality optics and D60 ( D90 too ),has an awesome autofocus which is pretty fast.



I feel XSi,and to some extent D90 have feature trade-off with price.Xsi comes with 20% more price than what this Nikon D60 kit costs , and that too with the basic 18-55mm IS lens.BUT with this D60 kit($700 in Feb-09),we get a 55-200mm VR (awesome lens) + camera bag(very useful accessory) + 16 Gb Memory card + card reader + extra battery. Add $300-$350 more to already high price,if u want these accessories with XSI or D90 . BUT BUT BUT , at that budget + a little more :) i would rather consider buying a PRO level camera,than a starter like the XSi or an intermdiate like the D90.

And with regards to features,as I said that apart from a good fast autofocus all other features are not indispensable. This is how.



1) AEB --> Consider this equation.

AEB in XSI or D90 == D60/D40 + Photoshop/Lightroom

Morover u can do in camera editing(image overlay) in D60 to produce those HDR,for which AEB is being craved for.



2) 9 Focus points - Focus points are nothing but the number of points in the scene which can be focused.You can easily focus a part of the image frame, using any focus point with a 3-point or even 1point focus.More focus points find application in fast moving subjects,but only if your camera auto focus is not sluggish :). If u want that go with a 51 AF point PRO level DSLR.



3) In Camera auto focus motor: This i would consider an important feature,if you are a pro and have some old non AF lenses. But for a starter ,it doesnt matter at all

4) Movie mode: Come on , sub standard jelly like movie from a DSLR , Go for a much much better handycam for 1/3rd the price .



Conclusion:: MY Take is get a GOOD VALUE camera which is as good as PRO in normal conditions just like NIkon D60.Believe me,you will be able to grow as a pro and learn as much as u can with an intermediate level camera. So all the money I save here ( good [...]), I can use later to buy a prolevel Camera body (remem :these lenses will work :) ) , like D300,D200 or ever D700. By then I suppoz the price of contemporary pro level bodies will also come down.This is what is called value addition.



PERFORMANCE AND FEATURES

Personally I would tag Nikon D60 in a starter category-feature wise but Above intermediate-performance wise(focus and quality of pictures).



I waited for good 3-4 months after buying this camera, so that I am atleast able to provide a useful review.During this time I used D60 exhaustively,innovatively and experimentally and I must say that I am very very pleased with the results. [...]



1) Dead shot autofocus which is very fast.

2) Awesome metering performance with spot metering.More than satisfactory performance for matrix metering in high contrast scenes.

3) Good Technology EXPEED Processor , renders nice colors and nearly accurate exposure ( if u know how to do it ) on 10MP sensor.

4) Sharp ISO performance upto ISO 800. If you are a close observer , you could find some noise in ISO 1600.

5) Nice Design , i just love handling the dial,in manual mode. Would have been slightly better , if there was dedicated buttons for WB , ISO.But here also , make ISO one button touch with Fn key and keep the WB settin on menu. This is how i do it.

6) White Balance works fine with single light sources.But it does not always render accurate colors with multiple light sources, that is not a camera limitation , that is indeed a technological limitation.

7) In camera editing -: Nothing much , but sometimes you would find it as a nice timepass while experimenting with your shots.



All in all i would say that this is complete value for money.You would not repent your spending,and every penny would add to the value addition of photographic endeavours.



Personally I would recommend to buy UV filters ( multi coated ) for lens protection, A CPL filter and a Lens pen .

Really happy with the purchase of this camera! It was rated a 'Best Buy' with Consumer Reports and offers everything that even a semi-pro photographer might want or need. I was looking for an above-average digital camera to be able to take my own photos for our company's web site. I figured I might have to pay the same price or more for a professional to take them.
